Costello, assistant professor of communication studies, feels the show will be a "valuable addition to the university experience." The show, entitled "Green Room," should begin airing in a few weeks. Students involved in the production of the news show hope to provide a program "for the students, by the students," Costello said. "Green Room" will feature five regular segments: news, student life, campus See "Communications" on page 7 GWU hires new head football coach by Randy Capps co-editor Steve Patton, former coach at North Greenville College, has been hired to become the new head football coach for the Runnin' Bulldogs, President Christopher White announced at a press conference on Wednesday, Jan. 22. Patton replaces Woody Fish, who resigned Jan. 11 after a 2-8 mark in 1996. Fish leaves GWU with a 72-71-1 overall record in 13 years, making him the most successful coach in school history. An impressive coaching record of 54-32- 1 follows Patton to Boiling Springs. He has held two college head coaching jobs, at Mars Hill and North Greenville, as well as positions in the American Football Association and the Arena Football League. However, it was not just his coaching credentials that led to his being chosen for this position. President White said that the search committee was looking for a candidate with strong Christian and family values, as well as a commitment to excellence. Patton has a wife, Debbie Talbert Patton, and two daughters, Stetson Kaye and Shelby Anne. He is also an active Fellowship of Christian Athletes member and frequently speaks at churches and other civic organizations. Patton believes that success in coaching requires discipline. "I don't feel like you can be successful without a certain amount of discipline. And the players have to buy into that, and they do have to be committed," Patton said. This coaching change falls just before national signing day, and, of course, Patton was anxious to get to work. "We want to get the best players available in the Carolinas. This is a great place to go to school right now," Patton said. Some people may won(|er why Patton would come back to the South Atlantic Conference after winning a title while at Mars Hill, but for him, it was simple. "I have a huge respect for the tradition here at Gardner-Webb...and I like the direction the president and the committee wanted this program to head in," Patton said. (photo by Karen Brower) Bond issue to be used for campus upgrades by James Julian contributing writer GWU is planning to use an $11 million bond to make significant capital improvements in buildings and technology, in addition to construction of new on-campus apartments. "Gardner-Webb students, faculty, and staff can expect to see the complete renovation of Hamrick Hall, a restructured heating system in 10 of our buildings, and a complete installation of fiberoptics on the campus," GWU President Christopher White has announced. Hamrick Hall, which was damaged by fire in the 1980's, will be completely renovated and the Broyhill School of Management will make that their new home. This project will take several years, but according to White, construction will begin as See "Bond Issue " on page 7
